The Municipality is asking for the public's help in extending the life of the Stanley landfill. Over the past two years, surveys of the landfill have shown that the amount of waste being landfilled has increased greatly. This has decreased the expected life of the Stanley landfill at a faster rate than predicted. Council and staff are currently reviewing solutions. A report was taken to Council on June 6th explaining the situation.
To help extend the life of the landfill, bulk waste and construction materials in excess of 5 m3 generated from one location will no longer be accepted at the Stanley landfill. This is a necessary step in extending the life of the Stanley landfill while other options are explored.
There are a few things that residents can do as well to help limit the waste entering the landfill. Some examples to help you reduce, reuse, or recycle include:
- Donating clothes, furniture, and other materials that still have life in them
- Reducing the number of single use plastics/paper products used
- Packing litterless lunches
- Switching to reusable shopping bags
- Repairing what can be repaired and/or upcycling
- Go paperless
- Shift spending habits to buy only what is needed
- Compost where possible
- Avoid purchasing goods that are individually packaged
If you are looking for alternative bulk waste disposal, a few options exist:
- Try Recycling Facilities, 519-457-1566
- Twin Creeks Environmental Centre, Watford, 1-866-909-4458.
This list is not exhaustive. The municipality does not have any affiliation or agreements/contracts in place with other facilities. Anyone needing bulk waste disposal will need to contact the private facilities to confirm if landfilling is available.
